Charting rules and classical sources

The professional chart is a reproducible set of calendar lookups, not an opaque verdict. This page lists every field, its rule and the classical source behind it, so the result can be checked line by line.

Algorithm overview

The chart is calculated locally in the browser. The steps below are fixed and reproducible; near a solar term or hour boundary, verify the original birth record.

01

Calendar and pillars

Input is Gregorian (1900–2099). The year pillar changes at the Beginning of Spring and the month pillar at the twelve Jie. Solar-term instants are compared in the birthplace timezone, so an overseas birth is not pushed into the wrong month or year by a time-zone offset. The day stem is the Day Master; the other stems are related to it as the Ten Gods.

02

Time, true solar time and the Zi hour

The birthplace timezone is resolved from an IANA name, so daylight saving and historical standard-time changes are handled automatically. True solar time follows: correction in minutes = longitude × 4 − the day’s UTC offset in minutes + equation of time. The day pillar rolls at 23:00 (Zi-hour day change), and the hour pillar uses the next day’s stem from that point. If the birth hour is unknown, the chart uses 12:00 noon at the birthplace and marks the hour as assumed.

03

Ten Gods, hidden stems and the twelve stages

Ten Gods follow the five-element generating and controlling cycle together with stem polarity: comparable (Bi Jian / Jie Cai), resource (Zheng Yin / Pian Yin), output (Shi Shen / Shang Guan), officer (Zheng Guan / Qi Sha) and wealth (Zheng Cai / Pian Cai). Hidden stems use the branch’s principal, middle and residual qi. Star stage is the day stem’s twelve-stage state on the branch; self seat uses the pillar’s own stem.

04

Void, Na Yin and the month command

Void (Kong Wang) is looked up from the sixty-cycle xun of the year and day pillars. Na Yin follows the classical sixty Jiazi table. The month command’s flourishing, strong, resting, trapped and dead states refer to the season of the month branch’s main qi; Chen, Xu, Chou and Wei are treated as Earth months.

05

Luck start and the twelve Major Luck steps

Major luck runs forward for yang-year males and yin-year females, backward for yin-year males and yang-year females. Luck start takes the interval from birth to the next Jie (forward) or from the previous Jie to birth (backward), divides by the whole solar-term month, then scales to ten years — approximately 365.2422 days per year, with years, months and days rounded down in order. This page displays twelve steps from the month pillar.

06

Annual and monthly luck

Annual luck begins at the Beginning of Spring of each year. Monthly luck changes at the twelve Jie: Li Chun, Jing Zhe, Qing Ming, Li Xia, Mang Zhong, Xiao Shu, Li Qiu, Bai Lu, Han Lu, Li Dong, Da Xue and Xiao Han. Clicking a Major Luck step refreshes the ten annual cards; clicking a year refreshes the twelve monthly cards and the transit columns.

07

Conception, Life and Body palaces

Conception palace takes the month stem forward one step and the month branch forward three steps. Life palace and body palace are derived from the solar-term month and hour using the classical palace method. They are displayed as separate columns in the “Conception / Body / Life” tab.

08

Spirit stars

Spirit stars are pure lookup tables keyed by the day stem, year stem, year branch, month branch and Na Yin. This chart covers the common set: Heavenly Noble, Tai Ji, Wen Chang, Guo Yin, Lu Shen, Jin Yu, Yang Ren, Fei Ren, Fu Xing, Tian Chu, Liu Xia, Hong Yan, Xue Ren, Peach Blossom, Travel Horse, Canopy, General Star, Robbery, Lost Spirit, Red Bird, Heavenly Joy, Solitary, Widow, Mourning, Condolence, Hook and Rope, Disaster, Heavenly Doctor, De Xiu, Xue Tang, Ci Guan, Heavenly Virtue, Monthly Virtue, Kui Gang and Void. Different schools may add or omit stars.

09

Stem-branch relations

The relations panel detects stem five-combination and control, branch six-combination, three-combination, half-combination, arching combination, hidden combination, clash, punishment, harm, destruction and three-directional meeting. The filter tabs show All / Combination / Clash / Punishment / Harm / Destruction / Meeting / Control. Combination and meeting describe structure only; they do not prove that transformation has occurred.

Boundaries of the result

This chart presents calendar fields and classical lookup results; it does not automatically judge chart patterns, useful gods or fate conclusions. Different schools differ on luck start, Zi-hour handling and spirit-star selection — compare charts only after aligning the rules.
